ADHD

What is ADHD?

ADHD is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects attention, impulse control, motivation, energy regulation, and executive functioning. It is not laziness, lack of discipline, or a character flaw — it is a difference in how the brain processes information and manages tasks.

Biologically, ADHD is linked to differences in brain chemicals like dopamine and norepinephrine, which help regulate focus, motivation, planning, and organization. Genetics play a major role, and ADHD often runs in families.

What Are the Symptoms?

ADHD can show up differently in everyone. Common symptoms include:

  • Struggling to focus or stay on task

  • Difficulty finishing projects or following through

  • Forgetfulness or losing items frequently

  • Poor time management or procrastination

  • Easily distracted or mentally “drifting”

  • Restlessness or feeling unable to relax

  • Impulsivity (interrupting, blurting out, acting quickly)

  • Racing thoughts or difficulty shutting the brain off

  • Emotional sensitivity or irritability

  • Trouble with organization, planning, or deadlines

Some people have mostly attention-related symptoms, some are more hyperactive or restless, and many have a combination of both.
ADHD can affect work, school, relationships, and daily life — but treatment helps tremendously.

How Are ADHD Treated?

ADHD is highly treatable, and the most effective care is personalized to each individual. Treatment may include:

Therapy

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

  • Behavioral Activation Therapy

  • Executive functioning coaching and skills training

  • Emotional regulation and impulse-control strategies

  • Tools for organization, time management, and planning

  • Support for shame, frustration, or low self-esteem

Medication

  • Stimulants: Adderall, Vyvanse, Ritalin, Focalin, Concerta – Improve focus & impulse control.

  • Non-stimulants: Strattera, Qelbree, Intuniv, Kapvay – Alternative for anxiety/side effects.

  • Bupropion (Wellbutrin): Supports focus, energy, motivation (esp. with depression).

  • Note: Medication aids focus & organization; does not change personality.

Lifestyle & Support

  • Sleep and daily routine stabilization

  • Nutrition and hydration

  • Exercise to improve attention and mood

  • Reduced overstimulation (screens, caffeine, chaotic environments)

  • Structure, reminders, planners, and organizational tools

Advanced Treatment Options

  • Combination medication + therapy

  • Support for co-occurring anxiety, depression, trauma, or learning challenges

  • Collaboration with schools, workplaces, or disability services for accommodations

How We Can Help at Better Balance Mental Health

We know ADHD can be misunderstood — especially in adults who spent years feeling “lazy,” “unmotivated,” or “behind.” We see the effort, not the struggle. You are not broken, and you are not alone.

At Better Balance Mental Health, we take time to listen to your experiences, frustrations, strengths, and goals. We look at the whole picture — not just the symptoms. If medication is helpful, we use it carefully and collaboratively. If you prefer therapy or lifestyle strategies first, we support that as well. You are always part of the decision.

Our goal is to help you feel more organized, calm, confident, and in control. We want you to feel capable, empowered, and understood — because ADHD is not a failure of effort. It’s a different kind of brain, and with the right support, it can thrive.

You don’t have to manage ADHD alone. We’re here to help, one step at a time.
