ADHD

What is ADHD?

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects attention, impulse control, motivation, emotional regulation, and executive functioning. ADHD is not laziness, lack of discipline, or a character flaw.  It reflects differences in how the brain processes information and manages tasks.

Biologically, ADHD is linked to differences in brain chemicals such as dopamine and norepinephrine, which play a key role in focus, planning, organization, and motivation. Genetics are a major factor, and ADHD often runs in families.

At Better Balance Mental Health, we provide compassionate ADHD evaluation and treatment for children, teens, and adults in California and Arizona — helping clients understand their brain and work with it, not against it.

What Are the Symptoms?

ADHD can present differently from person to person. Common symptoms include:

  • Difficulty focusing or staying on task

  • Trouble finishing projects or following through

  • Forgetfulness or frequently losing items

  • Poor time management or chronic procrastination

  • Easily distracted or mentally “drifting”

  • Restlessness or difficulty relaxing

  • Impulsivity (interrupting, blurting out, acting quickly)

  • Racing thoughts or trouble shutting the brain off

  • Emotional sensitivity or irritability

  • Challenges with organization, planning, or deadlines

Some individuals experience mostly inattentive symptoms, others are more hyperactive or impulsive, and many experience a combined presentation.

ADHD can affect school, work, relationships, and daily life — but effective treatment can be life-changing.
